‘Auld Lang Syne’ is a poem written by Robert Burns in 1788.It is used traditionally to bid farewell to the going year and welcoming the New Year at the stroke of midnight. I have sung this today to wish everyone A Very Happy and Prosperous New Year
The lyrics are….
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o’ auld lang syne!
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!
So here’s a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie’s a hand o’ thine,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!
The translation in Modern English is…..
Should old acquaintances be forgotten,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintances be forgotten,
And days of long ago!
For times gone by, my dear
For times gone by,
We will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by.
So here is a hand, my trusty friend,
And give us a hand of yours,
We will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by.
